Santiago offers the most complete and well preserved colonial architecture in Cuba, boasting an array of important buildings and residents. Our all-inclusive shore excursion includes a visit to Casa del Caribe to learn about Cuba’s popular Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria and the home of Diego Velazquez, one of the most famous painters of the 17th Century Spanish Golden Age. You’ll meet Cutumba, a dance troop specializing in Afro-Franco-Haitian and Cuban folkloric dance and see the famous Antonio Maceo Revolution Square, Moncada Barracks, and the El Cobre Sanctuary where the highly-revered Virgin of Charity (Virgin Mary) statue is housed.

Trinidad

Trinidad is a meticulously well-preserved Spanish colonial city, with rich architecture, cobblestone streets, palaces and plazas. As a result, it is sometimes referred to as the “museum city of Cuba.” Our tour of Casilda and the larger Trinidad area begins with a visit to the UNESCO Heritage Site, Manaca Iznaga Sugar Cane Plantation. You’ll meet the Santander family, which has been making clay pottery in the region for generations, and Lazaro Niebla, who preserves his heritage through beautiful reverse wood carvings of his elders and ancestors. You’ll also visit the Casa del Crochet, a collaborative project of 35 local women, and the Pincelada Colonial Cuban Art Gallery to browse local artist’s handiwork. Finally, we’ll survey the Museo Romantico (Romantic Museum), where we are transported back to sugar plantation life.  Housed in one of the former private mansions, you can see a well-preserved example of how 18th Century plantation owners would have lived.

Cienfuegos, Cuba

Cuba’s Perla del Sur (Pearl of the South) has long seduced travelers from around the island with its elegance, enlightened French spirit and feisty Caribbean panache.  Arranged around the country’s most spectacular natural bay, Cienfuegos is a nautical city with an enviable waterside setting. We’ll take in the unique UNEAC (Writers and Artists Union), which features lovely outdoor gardens hosting local music performances, and the Tomas Terry Theater, where you’ll meet the Chorus of Cienfuegos. Their repertoire includes Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and contemporary choral works. A coach takes us to Playa Giron, one of the two landing sites for the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. Our trip to the local museum will give us the Cuban perspective on the CIA-sponsored invasion.

Havana

Havana is buzzing with an eclectic, sophisticated mix of museums, galleries, music, and dance. Frequent open-air festivals take full advantage of the island’s sunny Caribbean climate.

On our first day, we’ll visit Havana Vieja (Old Havana), a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts) will acquaint you with over a century of Cuban fine arts. We visit Muraleando, a community art project and see a private dress rehearsal of the dance ensemble “Havana Queens” – combining classical ballet, flamenco and modern dance with Rumba and Salsa influences.

On our second day, we will drive to the outskirts of Havana to visit Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s home in Cuba. This beautiful property is where the Nobel Prize-winning author lived with his third wife Mary for over 30 years.  See the home in perfect condition with Hemingway’s personal belongings as he left them.  Walk the grounds to see his private writing studio, swimming pool, and beloved fishing boat, Pilar.  The boat is featured in his novel Islands in the Stream. This is also where he wrote several novels such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. We’ll even drive to Cojimar, the fishing village where he kept his boat, and which served as the setting for The Old Man and the Sea.
